Not for e-books

If you are a bibliophile who loves turning the pages, what are the chances you haven't thought of these already?

Dear Readers: Other things to use as a bookmark:

  • The corner of a used envelope.
  • A sticky note.
  • A folded magazine page.
  • A greeting card.
  • A photograph.

Do you at least recycle them?

A problem for the ages, apparently.

Dear Heloise: Before I read a magazine, I tear out all of those pesky subscription cards and sheets that don’t belong in there. Then I heave a sigh of relief, and I can relax and look at my magazine!

Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! ... OH!

Dear Heloise: When I was working (now retired), I took frozen meals to the office to cook in a microwave for lunch. Taking the hot dish back to my desk, I hit upon the idea of sliding the hot dish back into the cardboard package. Much easier to handle that way, and no burned fingers!

Mary reminds me of a former boyfriend's dad who never used potholders when he took things out of the oven.

The Post-It bookmark

It's only 2016, but this Heloise reader has hit upon one of the original intents for the Post-It! The sticky notes have their origins in the late 1960s and a chemist named Spencer Silver.

Dear Heloise: I have a hint for your column: I use a sticky note

Nice work, Dorothy.

P.S. Thanks to The Washington Post for putting its Heloise columns online.

The tired dryer trick

Heloise is my favorite. The reader hints that run in her columns are often worthy of facepalms and usually a "good, Lord, it's 2016."

From reader Judy Z., today.

Dear Heloise: When my clothes are slightly wrinkled...

Even my husband, who doesn't touch anything laundry-related with a 10-foot pole, knows this.
